The days are long but the years are short.
Someone recently reminded me that simple truth. As a child, I spent my days doing schoolwork or relaxing with my family. I played sports or wrote in my journl. Sometimes, I just played outside, enjoying any sunshine I could.
I definitely didn't spend my time worrying about bills or problems at work. Thankfully, I wouldn't have thought about instability in the Middle East or strange diseases that plague the earth. I didn't understand the gravity of life, and I was sheltered from many of the struggles people often deal with.
“Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” James 4:14
When searching for a balance in life, I've begun to learn that sometimes just sitting back and being thankful for the innocent and carefree days of our youth can be good medicine. It can be refreshing to remember how sweet those times in life were and bring perspective to areas of adulthood that shouldn't hold the weight they might currently hold in my life. The little things can once again be little, and the big things can be handled with prayer and confidence in God, knowing He has brought us through more than we even know. He saw us through times we were blissfully unaware of and continues to go before us even now.
“O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.” Psalm 71:17
Each day truly is a gift. It's an opportunity to live in the freedom Christ has so graciously given us. To live free from the weight of the world. To approach each problem or blessing with thanksgiving, knowing that each moment counts.
Sometimes, the days seem so long, but each one holds a beauty if we are willing to look for it. We easily take for granted all the wonderful blessings around us when we become focused on the small day-to-day tasks rather than the relationships and people in our lives. We forget how quickly the years go by, only to wish for them back once they're gone.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
It's time we refocus. We must start back at the beginning. Let us begin to find balance by remembering the gift of each day.
“This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
